To all our readers, let me bid you a Céad Míle Fáilte to the O’Connell Secondary School website. The 2018-19 school year marks the 191st anniversary of the school’s foundation in 1828. To fully experience the atmosphere of this busy school in the heart of Dublin’s North Inner City beside Croke Park, we hope that as you browse our website you will, at least, get a flavour of who we are and what we do. It is impossible to capture all that happens in O’Connell Secondary School on this site. However, we think our site gives a glimpse of the wealth of experiences on offer to the students in the school. There are a few changes to announce for the coming year.

It is an honour to introduce myself as the new acting principal at O’Connell Secondary School. I am immensely humbled to have been selected as the new leader of OCS, and have the chance to learn and grow with the school and community as we continue

the work of ensuring bright futures for our students. This community gives us the incredible opportunity to teach and learn from students and families representing so many backgrounds and cultures as they work to dev

elop their multicultural identities and reshape the future. I plan to continue to advocate for meeting the needs of all of our students, building relationships with in the community and working together to create the best outcomes for our students.

As we start our journey into 2018 – 2019 and beyond, I look forward to learning from every member of our school community.  I know that a change is tough, and

remain open to your voice and feedback in this process. Let us take on the new school year with a ‘daring to dream’ outlook. Please do not hesitate to reach out and contact me to share your wisdom, hopes and concerns so we can make this journey better together.

Hi folks. I am moving to Monkstown Christian Brothers’ College as Principal, beginning in September 2018. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people that I have had the pleasure of working with during my time in O’Connell Secondary School. I have spent 27 wonderful years in OCS, 16 as a teacher and 11 in school management. O’Connell Secondary School has been a huge part of my life and I will always have many fond memories of the school and its community. Indeed the school and its community will always have a special place in my heart.

An initial word of gratitude to all the pupils and Chelsea fans that I have encountered over the years. It has been a privilege and honour to serve you all as a member of staff here in OCS. I would like to thank the Christian Brothers in Edmund Rice House and the members of the Edmund Rice Trust for their ongoing support throughout my time in the school. I thank Principal Greg Murray who hired me back in 1991 as a teacher of Business Studies. Thanks to Peter Kierans, the late John Weir and Michael Finucane who were the School Principals during my time in OCS. Thanks also to Enda Kavanagh, the late Pat Loughman, Larry Lohan, Tom Hennessy, Dermot Morris and Lynn Kidney who were the Deputy-Principals during my time in the school. Thanks to the different Board of Management Chairpersons and various Board members including Trustee, Teacher and Parent nominees during my stay in OCS. I think of Donal O’Conaill, Paddy Coyle and Jimmy Reynolds especially in this regard.

To all my teaching and SNA colleagues past and present, I thank you all for your loyalty, support and collegiality during my time in OCS. I have made life-long friends in the staff-room and office in OCS and wish you all the best for the future. Thank you also to the members of the OCS PPU for their support over the years. A special word of gratitude to Patsy O’Keefe and the staff of OCS Primary School, our fabulous secretary Sandra,  caretaker Adam, house-keeper Bernie and evening caretaker Paddy – it was a real pleasure to work alongside you all over the years. So happy to meet, so sorry to part! Wishing Lynn and her staff all the best in the years ahead,

Best and sincerest good wishes to you all, Gerry
