Before applying, please contact the NCSE to confirm that your son is known to them and meets the eligibility criteria for placement in an ASD special class.
Appendix 1 – Admission to the ASD Special Class
O’Connell Secondary School, with the approval of the Minister for Education, has established a special class to provide an education exclusively for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants for the ASD special class must provide the following documentation in support of their application, in line with Department of Education Circular 0039/2025:
A professional diagnostic report confirming a diagnosis of Autism (DSM-IV/V or ICD 10/11).
Evidence of the student’s level of need as outlined in professional reports.
A professional recommendation stating that a special class placement is the most appropriate educational setting for the student, with a rationale for this recommendation.
A letter from the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) confirming that the student is known to the NCSE and meets the eligibility criteria for placement in an ASD special class.
Application Process
Applications must be submitted in line with the dates specified in the school’s Annual Admission Notice.
Places will be offered in accordance with the Admissions to Schools Act 2018 and this policy.
Where applications exceed available places, the school’s published oversubscription criteria will apply.
Important Notes
The school will not require additional reports or assessments beyond those outlined above.
Admission will not be contingent on resources, as resources are sanctioned separately by the Department of Education and the NCSE.
Admission will not be conditional on a child’s ability to participate in mainstream classes.
*Failure to accept an offer within the prescribed period above may result in the offer being withdrawn
